Lion Conservation: Protecting the Heart of the Wild
At Liona, our love for beauty extends far beyond skincare. For us, beauty is not only about radiant skin – it’s about preserving the natural wonders of our world. And at the very heart of that wonder is the lion – a powerful symbol of strength, grace, and pride in South Africa’s wild landscapes.
But our lions are under threat.
The Crisis Facing Lions in South Africa
Many people don’t realize that canned hunting often begins with seemingly innocent activities. Visitors are invited to pet and bottle-feed lion cubs, believing they are helping orphaned animals. In reality, these cubs are bred for profit. Once they are too old and strong to be handled, they are moved into breeding or holding facilities where they become tame, accustomed to humans, and ultimately sold to the canned hunting industry. By the time they are adults, these lions are released into enclosed spaces where paying hunters kill them with ease — the very same lions once cuddled and photographed as cubs.
Every year, lions fall victim to poaching and the brutal canned hunting industry. In canned hunting, lions are bred in captivity, often in cruel conditions, only to be released into enclosed areas where hunters pay for the opportunity to shoot them. These lions never stand a chance. It is not conservation – it is exploitation dressed up as tourism.
Beyond canned hunting, wild lions face the constant dangers of poaching, driven by the demand for bones, claws, and other body parts sold illegally on the black market. The numbers are staggering – South Africa has lost nearly two-thirds of its wild lion population in just a few decades. With fewer than 20,000 lions left in the wild across Africa, every pride, every roar, and every cub counts.
Why It Matters
Lions are not just icons of the wild – they are keystone species. Their presence maintains the delicate balance of ecosystems, keeping prey populations in check and ensuring the health of grasslands and savannahs. Without lions, entire ecosystems begin to collapse. Protecting lions means protecting the future of African biodiversity.
Our Commitment
At Liona, we believe true beauty is wild, natural, and free. That’s why a percentage of our profits goes directly towards supporting lion conservation efforts in South Africa. By choosing our products, you’re not just investing in your skin – you’re helping us stand against cruelty, exploitation, and extinction.
Together, we can raise awareness, protect habitats, and fight against the canned hunting industry. Together, we can make sure the roar of the lion never falls silent.
